The poitevin Marsh is the second largest wetland of France after the Camargue. It is a perfect getaway for a stroll in boat. The Marais poitevin
The poitevin Marsh is the second largest wetland of France after the Camargue. It is a protected natural space entirely shaped by man of approximately 100'000 hectares. It covers the departments of Vendée, Deux-Sèvres and Charente-Maritime.
The city is famous for including host the headquarters of the major French insurance mutuals. But Niort is also the main gateway of the marais poitevin ('green Venice') and one of the cities in Poitou history.
In addition to its vestiges of the medieval fortifications, Melle has three interesting Romanesque churches. Their construction is concentrated between the end of the 11th century and the middle of the 12th century, providing a digest of the architectural evolution of the time in one place.
City "Country of Art and history", Parthenay is a medieval town that is built on a rocky spur overlooking a loop of the Thouet. It is charmed by the many Romanesque buildings, walls, fortified doors and the Saint-Jacques district with its timber-framed houses.
The castle of Oiron
