French writer. The virtuous sentimentalism and the spirit of tolerance which are expressed there made the success of its moral Tales (1761) and of its philosophical novels, Bélisaire (1766) and Incas (1777).
He collaborated in the Encyclopedia and left an interesting autobiography, Mémoires of a father (posth., 1804). (French Academy, 1763).
