Doctorate in medicine in Zurich (1865), training of ophtalmologist in Zurich with Johann Friedrich Horner, Berlin with Albrecht von Graefe and Paris. Leader in Lausanne the ophthalmic hospital since 1869, Dufour was named professor of ophthalmology during the creation of the university in 1890; he enjoyed an international repute in ocular surgery. Member of Constituent of Vaud of 1885, it decided already for the right to vote of the women. Middle-class man of honor of Lausanne (1903).
